York Region Transit fares to change in New Year

NEWMARKET York Regional Council has approved a modest fare increase for York Region Transit (YRT) and Viva, effective January 1, 2006.  The new fare rates are required to help offset rising operational costs and costs associated with rapid service expansion for the $184.5 million system.

The new fares will be comparable with other transit systems in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA), with YRT/Viva fares slightly below average in most cases.  Weekly passes, GO supplements and GO sticker fares will not change.

York Region greatly increased its transit system in September with the launch of the Viva Rapid Transit service along Yonge Street and Highway 7.  By January 2006, 85 Viva buses will have been added to the YRT fleet, significantly enhancing overall service.

YRT has seen an increase of 20 per cent in operational costs since it amalgamated its service in 2001.  This has been due to a tremendous increase in the provision of new routes, extended service hours and an increase in the number of service vehicles.  Extra economic pressures have also come from new operational contracts with fuel escalation clauses that reflect recent increases in fuel costs.

With the addition of the new service, YRT's cost recovery ratio the amount of revenue brought in to offset costs fell from 50 per cent in 2004 to 42.5 per cent in 2005.  Cost recovery for 2006 was anticipated to fall to 38 per cent without an increase.

Volatile fuel prices through 2005 have added $1.6 million in fuel escalation charges to YRT.  Should fuel prices remain near one dollar per litre, it would cost an additional $3.4 million to operate transit vehicles in 2006.

The change in fares is anticipated to bring in nearly $2 million in additional revenue to the Region, and bring the cost recovery ratio up to 40 per cent.

York Region leads the GTA with one of the highest percentage increases of riders in the country, with a consistently high growth rate of 10 per cent or more each year since the service was amalgamated in 2001.  Transit remains the most environmentally friendly and economic method of travel.
