New Sutton Water Pollution Control Plant awarded Project of the Year by Ontario Public Works Association

NEWMARKET The Regional Municipality of York has received the Ontario Public Works Association's (OPWA) prestigious Project of the Year Award (Environment category) for the Sutton Water Pollution Control Plant in the Town of Georgina.

"This award really demonstrates a level of excellence in the high calibre of work that York Region's Transportation and Works department exhibits," said Regional Chair and CEO Bill Fisch.  "The Sutton Water Pollution Control Plant is a highly innovative project that will serve the needs of a growing Georgina community for years to come."

The OPWA is the Ontario chapter of the Canadian Public Works Association (CPWA), known since 1986 as the "voice of public works in Canada".  The CPWA was founded to enhance the quality of public works products and services to Canadian citizens.

The award was based on a number of criteria, including:
Good construction management techniques and completion of the project on schedule
 Safety performance
 Community relations
Demonstrated awareness for the need to protect the environment during the project
 Unusual accomplishments under adverse conditions
Additional conditions deemed of importance to the public works agency

"The methodology of this project was unconventional in a number of ways, including a design/build approach and use of existing natural features to mitigate environmental impacts," said Richmond Hill Mayor Bill Bell, Chair of the Region's Transportation and Works Committee.  "I'm very pleased that the OPWA recognized the unique project approach we undertook to provide Georgina residents with a high quality, environmentally-conscious facility design."

The design/build contractor for the project was AWS Engineers and Planners Corporation (formerly Axurix North America).  AWS was chosen following an extensive technical and cost evaluation process.
