Aspiring legal eagles flex their courtroom muscle at York Region high school mock trials competition

NEWMARKET More than 22 secondary schools from across York Region will converge at York Regions Council Chambers for the opening ceremonies of the York Region Secondary School Mock Trials competition on Tuesday, February 22, starting at 2:30 p.m.

BACKGROUND:  Students are being given the unique opportunity to take what they have learned in the classroom and apply it during the competition in a real courtroom setting, in front of a real judge.  During the mock trials, students will gain valuable insights into the inner-workings of the criminal justice system as well as future career options in law and law enforcement. Each student team has been paired up with either a defence- or Crown attorney-coach in preparation for the competition.
York Regional Chair and CEO Bill Fisch will offer welcoming remarks.  Justices Heather Smith, Brian Lennox and David Wake along with York Regional Police Chief Armand La Barge will also be on hand for the opening ceremonies and for a photo opportunity with student participants.
