York Region unveils Oak Ridges Moraine Signs

NEWMARKET Staff from the Regional Municipality of York and the Oak Ridges Moraine Foundation unveiled signs across York Region earlier this week, showing the location of the environmentally significant Oak Ridges Moraine.

"The Oak Ridges Moraine is perhaps our most recognized natural heritage feature," said Regional Chair and CEO Bill Fisch.  "These signs will alert residents and visitors to the location of the moraine, and hopefully illustrate just how significant a feature it is on the York Region landscape."

The signs are 4' x 6'in size, with "Entering the Oak Ridges Moraine" emblazoned on them.  The signs also have a Web address for passing motorists to find more information: www.ormf.com

"It's important to emphasize the benefits that the moraine gives to the residents of York Region; and this starts with simple recognition," said Michael Scott, Executive Director of the Oak Ridges Moraine Foundation.  "These signs will do just that, by acting as both a promotional tool and an educational tool."

The Moraine is the largest natural heritage feature within York Region, stretching 160 km across the Greater Toronto Area (GTA), from Northumberland County in the east to the Niagara Escarpment in the west. Its rolling terrain sustains some of the most significant and distinctive woodlots and wetlands in the GTA.
