Reuse program to open at Georgina Transfer Station
in spring 2004

NEWMARKET York Regional Council today allocated $10,000 to commence operation of a reuse centre at the Georgina Transfer Station.  The centre will be run as a 12-month pilot project by Goodwill Industries on behalf of York Region.

"Cutting back on waste through recycling is a priority of our Solid Waste Management strategy," said Regional Chair and CEO Bill Fisch.  "The Georgina reuse centre is a convenient and economical way to keep useable items out of our waste stream."

The project will commence in spring 2004 at the Region's Solid Waste Transfer Station, located at 23068 Warden Avenue in the Town of Georgina.  It will operate out of a trailer, located west of the Household Hazardous Waste facility.  York Region residents will be able to drop off unwanted clothing or housewares at the trailer, for later resale off-site.

After considering numerous non-profit organizations, York Region awarded operation of the reuse centre to Goodwill Industries.  Goodwill is a registered Canadian charity that operates 35 retail stores throughout Ontario, including York Region.  Each year they receive an estimated 30 million pounds of reusable clothing and housewares for resale at their various locations.

It is anticipated that the reuse program will divert between 20 and 30 tonnes of reusable goods from landfill over the course of the pilot period.  While modest in comparison to the amount of waste generated annually, it is an important first step towards the establishment of a Region-wide reuse program.

"Establishing a reuse centre in Georgina is another great way to help educate the public on the importance of recycling," said Georgina Regional Councillor Danny Wheeler, Chair of the Region's Solid Waste Management Committee.  "I'm optimistic that this pilot project will help to pave the way for a comprehensive region-wide program in the near future."

Should the 12-month pilot project prove successful, York Region will consider the implementation of a full-scale reuse program, involving the sale or giveaway of reusable items on-site.
