NEWMARKET – Working closely with staff from the City of Vaughan, the Regional Municipality of York has selected a new site to establish a Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) Depot in Vaughan.
“I’m very pleased that we were able to secure a new property for household hazardous waste disposal that meets the needs of Vaughan and the Region,” said Regional Chair and CEO Bill Fisch. “We look forward to constructing the new facility as soon as possible, so that residents in the Vaughan area will be able to dispose of hazardous waste safely.”
The new site is located on two parcels of land south of York Region’s Southwest Patrol Yard on Rutherford Road, east of Jane Street. It will replace the existing facility at the former Keele Valley Landfill Site, which is scheduled to close on December 31, 2003.
The establishment of the depot is contingent upon the successful purchase of the properties from the City of Vaughan, and a Certificate of Approval from the Ministry of the Environment.
The Region has retained SNC-Lavalin Engineers and Constructors Inc. to design the facility, and will issue a purchase order to Laden Steel Fabricators Inc. for installation. A tender will be issued this fall for the operation of the new facility, commencing January 1, 2004.
