Nature Conservancy of Canada to preserve donated green space on Oak Ridges Moraine

York Region and NEWMARKET – The Nature Conservancy of Canada (NCC) today announced the official dedication of the MacMillan Nature Reserve in the City of Vaughan.  The 120 acre (48.6 hectare) property, situated on the Oak Ridges Moraine, was generously donated to NCC by Dr. Robert and Mrs. Lyn MacMillan.  It will be protected jointly by NCC and the Regional Municipality of York through an innovative land securement/protection partnership.
"Land securement is a key part of York Region's Greening Strategy.  The strategy protects and enhances a system of greenspace across the region," said York Region Chair and CEO Bill Fisch.  "The generosity and trust that the MacMillans have bestowed upon us with this wonderful donation will help achieve a green legacy for generations to come."
York Region formed a partnership with NCC in 2001 to protect key natural areas within York Region.  The MacMillan Nature Preserve represents the single largest property donation in York Region under the program.
“The City of Vaughan has witnessed tremendous change over the last number of years,” said City of Vaughan Mayor Michael Di Biase. “I’m very pleased that with the vision of the MacMillan family, our area will continue to offer our residents a significant natural heritage treasure.”
The preserve contains forests, meadows, streams, two tributaries of the Don River and former agricultural lands. The goal for the property will be to protect and restore its characteristic woodland and grassland ecosystems and maintain its historic rural character.
The Region, NCC, the City of Vaughan and the Toronto and Region Conservation Authority will be working together to develop a site conservation plan that includes reforestation, field and grassland management and eventual public access, where appropriate.
