York Region shares second planning award of excellence for Oak Ridges Moraine Tri-Regional Strategy

NEWMARKET The Ontario Professional Planners Institute (OPPI) has awarded York, Peel and Durham Regions a 2002 Award for Planning Excellence for their joint work on the Tri-Regional Strategy to protect the Oak Ridges Moraine. The Regions were also recognized with the Canadian Institute of Planners' 2002 Award for Planning Excellence for the same project in May.

"York Region is pleased to be recognized with its regional neighbours for a prestigious planning award," said Regional Chair Bill Fisch. "York Regional Council and staff provided leadership in this important project."

The Strategy, entitled Oak Ridges Moraine Proposals for the Protection and Management of a Unique Landscape, contains a series of proposals to protect the Moraine through more comprehensive policies and better information. It was endorsed by all three regional councils in the summer of 2001. By November of that year, the Province of Ontario had acted and released the draft Oak Ridges Moraine Conservation Plan. Many of the recommendations from the Tri-Regional Strategy were embodied in the Plan, the legislation and the concept of the Oak Ridges Moraine Foundation for securement of key Moraine lands.

"The most important achievement is the protection of the Oak Ridges Moraine and its important features, functions and linkages." said Markham Regional Councillor and Deputy Mayor Frank Scarpitti, Chair of the Planning and Economic Development Committee. "Having this work recognized by planning associations such as the OPPI make us proud of this initiative."

The work of the three Regions was recognized for its achievements in OPPI's Planning Studies/Reports category on the basis of its innovation, professional recognition, implementation and literacy. OPPI received a total of 31 submissions across the province for its 2002 Excellence in Planning Awards.

The award will be presented at a dinner on September 27th in London, Ontario.
