NEWMARKET – The Regional Municipality of York welcomed today's announcement of the long-awaited federal-provincial program to fund $489.42 million in affordable housing in Ontario over the next five years.
"This announcement comes at an opportune time. Staff are finalizing a York Region Housing Supply Strategy that Council could adopt next month," says Regional Chair Bill Fisch. "The first phase of the proposed two-phase Strategy focuses on creating affordable rental housing using new federal and provincial funding, as well as partnerships with the private sector."
Affordable housing is an urgent need in York region:
York Region's Housing Supply Strategy strives to provide wider housing options from subsidized rental to ownership housing for people of low and moderate incomes. The Strategy will be before Regional Council on June 27, 2002. A Municipal Housing Facilities Bylaw that will enable the Region to provide incentives to the private sector in the creation affordable housing will also be tabled at Council.
