June 27, 2002 York Region hires new Associate Medical Officer of Health

 

NEWMARKET - The Regional Municipality of York is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Hanif Kassam as Associate Medical Officer of Health (AMOH) and Director, Public Health Programs, effective July 4, 2002. Dr. Kassam will succeed Dr.Troy Herrick who has accepted the position of Medical Officer of Health with the Wellington-Dufferin-Guelph Health Unit.

Dr. Kassam received his medical training at McMaster University. He earned a post-graduate degree in Community Health and Epidemiology from the University of Toronto where he received his Fellowship from the Royal College of Physicians of Canada (FRCPC), Community Medicine certification.

Dr. Kassam brings to the AMOH position a wealth of leadership experience. Following his position as Deputy Medical Health Officer for the Regina Health District, Dr. Kassam served as Commissioner/Medical Officer of Health, Region of Waterloo and Physician Manager/Provincial Epidemiologist (Communicable Diseases) for the Public Health Branch, Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care.

In the position of Associate Medical Officer of Health and Director, Public Health Programs,

Dr. Kassam will be responsible for the management of the public health programs and services provided by the Health Services Department. In the absence of Dr. K. Helena Jaczek, Commissioner of Health Services and Medical Officer of Health, Dr. Kassam will carry out the legal responsibilities of the office of the Medical Officer of Health as defined in the provincial statute and municipal by-law in accordance with the policies of York Regional Council.
