NEWMARKET – Regional Chair Bill Fisch today joined Bob Sherwood, Chair of the Markham Mobility Foundation to accept the keys to a new lift-equipped van. The donation was courtesy of Ken Stathakis, owner of The Octagon Restaurant in Thornhill.
Mr. Stathakis, through K.P.S. Holdings Inc., made the direct donation of the leased van to York Region Transit Mobility Plus, for use in Markham, Richmond Hill and Vaughan. The van is a 2001 Dodge Ram 2500, equipped with an electro-hydraulic lift for wheelchairs and scooters that can accommodate two wheelchairs or scooters at any one time.
"This is a thoughtful donation from The Octagon Restaurant and Mr. Stathakis, who is well known for his charitable work," said Bill Fisch, Regional Chair. "Working directly with corporations is an excellent example of partnership between business and government, and I hope this signals a trend. York Region Transit will put this vehicle to good use, and it will benefit those in need."
K.P.S. Holdings Inc. has been a long-time supporter of the Markham Mobility Foundation, a charitable organization established 19 years ago to raise funds for the transportation of persons with disabilities. The Dodge Ram van is being leased from Old Mill Pontiac Buick Cadillac Limited for a three-year term.
Since its inception, the Markham Mobility Foundation has raised more than $750,000 in charitable donations, helping persons with disabilities with a safe and reliable form of transportation.
"This is an outstanding corporate donation, and for that we are most grateful," said Bob Sherwood, Chair of the Markham Mobility Foundation. "Our foundation is already in discussion with a second corporation, and I know today's donation will go a long way to securing additional funds and vehicles to be used by York Region Transit."
