York Council appoints Georgina Regional Councillor to Police Services Board

NEWMARKET York Regional Council today appointed Georgina Regional Councillor Danny Wheeler to the York Regional Police Services Board, filling a vacancy created by the resignation of former member and Board Chair Margaret Black, Mayor of King Township.

At a meeting of the Police Services Board yesterday, members elected Richmond Hill Regional Councillor Dave Barrow as Board Chair for 2002.

"Danny brings a wealth of knowledge to the Board. He will be an important member whose opinion is highly valued, particularly regarding police matters dealing with the northern half of York Region," said Bill Fisch, Regional Chair. "Dave will put his experience on the Police Services Board to good use as the Board's new Chair."

The York Regional Police Services Board is a civilian governing body that receives its authority under the Police Services Act. The Board is responsible for providing adequate and effective police services in the Regional Municipality of York and has specific legislated responsibilities outlined in the Act.

"It is an absolute privilege to serve as Chair of the Police Services Board," said Dave Barrow. "I will definitely draw on my previous experience as Vice Chair, and help our Board forge ahead with a firm commitment that York Regional Police maintain its status as a progressive and forward-thinking police force."

"It is an honour for me to become a member of the Police Services Board, and I am eager to assume my duties," added Danny Wheeler. "Our police are faced with tremendous challenges every day, but together, I know we are all up to the task."
