York Region will become the first major Canadian municipality to operate a state-of-the-art, single stream integrated MRF of this magnitude.
"Today marks a very large step forward for our Region as we aim to dramatically increase the amount of waste diverted away from landfill," said Bill Fisch, Regional Chair. "We have already committed to a three-stream collection program, with a heavy emphasis on enhanced recycling and composting efforts. An extensive education program will also be developed because we are asking our residents to considerably alter their disposal and recycling habits."
Agreements to be finalized with Miller Waste Systems include the following:
"The sophisticated material recycling facility is a made-in-York Region solution and an excellent example of a public-private partnership with Miller Waste Systems," said Alan Wells, York Region's Chief Administrative Officer. "The Region maintains full control of the facility and allows us to meet our diversion targets, while York Region residents have the benefit of not having to sort their recycling products into various categories."
