NEWMARKET – Regional Council today endorsed a recommendation to enter into a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Oak Ridges Moraine (ORM) Land Trust to secure conservation easements or donations of environmentally-sensitive or scientifically- significant lands located on the Oak Ridges Moraine within York Region.
"The MOU will support the Land Trust's activities of conserving land on the Oak Ridges Moraine and the Region's Greening Strategy to protect York Region's natural environment," said Regional Chair Bill Fisch.
Under the agreement, York Region will commit to partner with ORM Land Trust on a property-by-property basis. In return, the Land Trust will commit to support acquisition initiatives on the Moraine within York Region. This would primarily take place in the form of donations and easements.
"The Oak Ridges Moraine Land Trust is pleased to have this opportunity to work with the Region of York to achieve our joint goals of securing and conserving important environmental lands on the Moraine," said Tom Atkins, President, ORM Land Trust. "Lands may be donated to either the Oak Ridges Moraine Land Trust or York Region."
The authority to disburse funds, execute agreements for the management of lands and accept land or easements within the partnership will lie with the Region's Commissioner of Transportation and Works, Mr. Kees Schipper.
York Region will continue to co-ordinate its greenlands requirements and selection criteria with its other partners. The Memorandum of Understanding will be reviewed after one year.
The ORM Land Trust is a non-profit, non-government, registered charitable organization whose goal is to conserve land on the Oak Ridges Moraine.
